Welcome to the CAES Writing Centre at the University of Hong Kong!
The Writing Centre provides a one-to-one writing consultation service in a friendly, relaxing setting to UGC-funded students at any level of study. Trained undergraduate and postgraduate tutors from a range of disciplines are available to support writers at any stage of the writing process, and on any type of writing project, including but not limited to course assignments, personal statements, resumes, and cover letters. Our aim is to help writers become critical readers of their own work and develop skills for revising their writing autonomously.
You can book a 30-minute consultation session up to two weeks in advance, and we encourage you to upload your writing at least 2 days before your consultation. Your tutor will highlight issues in your writing, and discuss with you how to resolve these issues. Our tutors are also happy to help you in the pre-writing stages of any writing project. Note that your tutor will not give advice or instructions that would in any way result in the tutor becoming a co-author of your text. The SWCP is not a proofreading or editing service. Our focus is on helping you, the writer, make decisions about your writing.
All CAES Writing Centre consultations are held in the HKU Main, Dental, and Medical Libraries. When you book a consultation, take note of which library the booking is for.
The Writing Centre operates under an interinstitutional project called the Student-Tutor Writing Consultation Programme (SWCP). The SWCP is funded by the University Grants Committee, with partner centres at City University of Hong Kong and Hong Kong Baptist University.
