The Advisory Zone
The Centre for Applied English Studies (CAES) offers English enhancement support to help HKU students with their university studies. These services are provided in the Advisory Zone, located in the Student Advisory Services Zone, Zone R on the 2/F of the Chi Wah Learning Commons. The Advisory Zone is a conversation-friendly learning space so we encourage students to use it for group discussions and social activities.
Advisory Zone – Services
Students can only book one session of each service per week.
CAES Lecturers provide support for both short-term (applications, university assignments) and long-term English goals (improvement in Speaking & Writing), as well as running a variety of workshops and discussions!
English Teaching Assistants:
CAES English Teaching Assistants (ETAs) are recent university graduates who work in the Advisory Zone full-time. Their services range from mock interviews to exam help, so they can be your first stop if you’re unsure where to start. Our ETAs also run various workshops and discussions including ones for IELTS, Academic Writing and Current Affairs.
HKU students with native or near-native speaking ability in English have volunteered to join the Advisory Zone as Peer Tutors to help their fellow students practice their spoken English. These sessions focus on social English, i.e. using everyday English in an informal way to become familiar and comfortable with the language.
Advisory Zone – Additional Services
Workshops & Discussions:
Our Language Advisors and ETAs have designed various workshops and discussions to help students improve their English skills – check out the ETA Timetable & the Language Advisor Timetable or book one directly by clicking Book Now. Students may attend as many workshops and/or discussions each week as they would like!
We also provide an online advising service through Google Hangouts – you can send us your work beforehand or during the online session.
Advisory Zone – Resources
The Advisory Zone also has thousands of resources to help you improve your English. We offer…
- Books on pronunciation, grammar, academic writing & research, interviews & CV writing, subject specific books (e.g. Business English) and tests (e.g IELTS, LPATE, TOEFL, GRE)
- Quick Use computers with IELTS Listening tests – Please bring your own headphones if you wish to practice the listening tests.
- Magazines and Newspapers (e.g. South China Morning Post, The Times)
- DVDs of films and TV series, most with English subtitles to help you with learning new words and correct pronunciation – You can borrow DVDs to watch anywhere in the Learning Commons from the counter assistant from 10am to 4pm.
PLEASE NOTE: CAES seeks to ensure that its language support services run smoothly. However, due to unforeseen circumstances (e.g. illness or professional commitments) it may be necessary to cancel a session. Unfortunately we are unable to provide make-up sessions when this occurs. We apologise for this and thank you for your understanding.
